2017 Upbeat with Alasdair: Alasdair Neale to Discuss ‘The Russian Soul in Music’
‘Upbeat with Alasdair’ Scheduled for Jan. 3 at Community Library
SUN VALLEY, Idaho — Sun Valley Summer Symphony Music Director Alasdair Neale will speak on Tuesday, Jan. 3 on “The Russian Soul in Music: From Tchaikovsky to Shostakovich.” This also will be the theme of the symphony’s “In Focus” Series of concerts July 24-28, 2017.
“I’ve had a great passion for Russian music ever since I fell in love with the Tchaikovsky symphonies as a teenager,” Neale said. “There’s something about the intensity of the Russian musical soul that’s always grabbed me — the way it embraces the extremes of emotion, both the light and the dark, with unflinching honesty.
“During the In Focus week we’ll be exploring this theme in greater detail, with music by Tchaikovsky (of course!), Rachmaninoff, Prokofiev, Mussorgsky and Shostakovitch. And for Upbeat with Alasdair, I’ll be your guide on a whistle-stop tour that will hopefully give you an idea of some of the common threads that make up the rich tapestry of Russian musical history.”
The program will be at 6:30 p.m. at The Community Library, 415 Spruce Ave. N., Ketchum, as part of the symphony’s “Upbeat with Alasdair” series of talks. The talk is free, but space is limited and the event often full.
Reservations may be made by calling the symphony office, (208) 622-5607, or by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
“This insider’s view of the upcoming concerts will add to your enjoyment of next summer’s performances,” said Jenny Krueger, symphony executive director.
