2018 Season Pairs Exciting and Familiar Repertoire with New Multimedia Productions

Sun Valley Summer Symphony Season Announcement

Sun Valley Summer Symphony announces an eclectic 2018 summer season, July 29 through August 23, featuring renowned soloists, performances of both familiar and modern classical works, a pairing of orchestra with film and a stunning and newly imagined setting for Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloé.

The Symphony’s 34th season opens with four In Focus Series concerts, showcasing the mastery of Mozart with a collection of outstanding works. In Focus Series programs utilize intimate ensembles and small chamber orchestras, and integrate brief discussion about the evening’s program, bringing the music “into focus.” Entitled “Mozart Forever!: A Brief Survey of Masterpieces for His Time and Ours,” the series begins on July 29 with chamber works including the sparkling Piano Sonata No. 11 in A Major, K. 331. July 31 and August 2 programs include pianist David Fung performing the Piano Concerto No. 23, K. 433, and an evening of Mozart’s greatest opera overtures and arias. The final In Focus concert on August 3 highlights Mozart’s superior symphonic writing with a performance of his Jupiter Symphony.

The Orchestra Festival begins August 5 with Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4 in F Minor and concludes on August 23 with a performance of Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloé, brought to life in an immersive new multimedia production designed by award-winning film director and projection designer David Murakami and commissioned by the Symphony. In between, the Festival will present powerhouse pianist Yefim Bronfman performing Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4, STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE performed live to film, the young phenom violinist Benjamin Beilman playing the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto, and a performance of Leonard Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story in celebration of the iconic composer’s 100th birthday.

“From the magic of Star Wars to the mystery of Sibelius; from the drama of Shostakovich to the sensuality of Ravel; from the miracle of Mozart to the irresistible swing of West Side Story, there’s something for just about everyone in the 2018 Festival,” says Music Director Alasdair Neale. “All of my colleagues join me in eager anticipation of what is certain to be another memory-making season.”

The 2018 season brings exciting new productions and guest artists to Sun Valley. The Sun Valley Summer Symphony will be among the first orchestras to present STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE in Concert for Pops Night on August 19. Attendees will hear the iconic movie score by Oscar-winning composer John Williams live, while the motion picture is shown on big screens on both the Pavilion stage and lawn. The Symphony brings performances by world-class guest artists David Fung (piano), Benjamin Beilman (violin), Celine Byrne (soprano) and Hugh Russell (baritone) to Sun Valley for the first time. Returning soloists include Yefim Bronfman (piano), Amos Yang (cello) and Peter Henderson (piano).

2018 In Focus Series concerts start at 6:00 PM, and Orchestra Festival concerts start at 6:30 PM, except for STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE in Concert on August 19 (5:30 PM) and Daphnis et Chloé on August 23 (8:00 PM).
